Daily reading: 2 December
The Righteous Branch and the Covenant with David.
Something to read
The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfil the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: 'The Lord is our righteousness.'’
Something to think about
I really don’t like the word ‘surely’ in today’s reading. What about you? To me it suggests a certainty of faith that I don’t currently have. The prophet spoke these words during a time of intense pain for the people of God. They felt abandoned by him.
Think about that for a moment. They thought God had abandoned them.
Why wouldn’t they think that? They had lost a major war. Their religious, political and military leaders had been dragged off to a far land. The rest had been left to fend for themselves in a destroyed landscape. Years had gone past, generations even, and still no redemption. God? Where is he when you need him?
And yet up comes this prophet with a level of certainty, saying that all will be well. They had been waiting a long time for action and here comes Jeremiah with more words, albeit infused with faith. It takes faith to wait a long time for action, for things to change.
Mine can be pretty weak at times. What about yours?
Something to do
Before reading tomorrow’s devotional, spend five minutes in silence. The next day, spend 10 minutes in silence. And build that time up as the week progresses. How hard is to wait? Reflect on how you feel.
Something to pray
Lord, I have waited for many things in my life.
Sometimes, as I have waited for prayer to be answered,
the waiting has been tough and has tested my faith.
Strengthen me when I am weak.
In Jesus’ name.
