Two prayers for those affected by flooding in India, Bangladesh and Nepal.
Faithful and loving, God,
we pray for our sisters and brothers
affected by the intense monsoon rains
in Bangladesh, India and Nepal.
Rescue all who are marooned by flood waters.
Shelter those who have had to leave home.
Comfort the distressed, hold the bereaved.
Cause the rains to cease and the waters subside.
Support those who are working to respond.
Grant them all the support they need
to reach the most vulnerable and at great risk
and to provide for all their essential needs.
Strengthen the many who are affected
by the generosity and concern
of your people from around the world
who long for your will to be done on earth as in heaven.
In the name of your Beloved Son we pray,
Amen.
'But let justice roll down like waters,
And righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.' (Amos 5: 24)
As flood waters rise destroying homes and livelihoods
As still water grows stagnant threatening disease
As embankments are weakened causing increasing concern
As lives are put on hold and families are devastated
By intense monsoon rains in Bangladesh, India and Nepal,
we raise our voices with the prophet of old
and cry for justice to roll down like waters.
Justice for those who are suffering the most,
but have done the least to cause the problem.
We long for righteousness like an ever-flowing stream
to quench the deep thirst and fill the hungry bellies
of those who have had enough of empty promises
of relief packages and carbon reduction commitments.
The time is now for climate justice,
for the righteousness that brings fullness of life.
May all our hungers and thirsts be filled.
In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
