The big banks in the UK could be funding the creation of a cleaner, safer planet for us all, but instead they are funding the destruction of our common home. And they’re doing it with your money.

Since November 2016, thousands of people have emailed the biggest high street banks to ask them to stop funding climate change with the investments and loans they make with our money.
Some banks have started to respond and they all agree that climate change is a huge threat to our world. But we haven’t seen the action required to back up their words.This autumn, we’re doubling our efforts to persuade them to help us build a better, safer world.
Every day in September and October, campaigners will visit a high street branch of one of the biggest UK banks. And to top it all off, we’re planning a surprise event in London, a city which lies at the heart of the global financial system and where all four banks are headquartered.
The banks need to act soon: we’re running out of time to make the Big Shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The banks must put our money where their mouths are, and the pressure needs to come from us.
- Visit our Big Shift page, find out why your bank is key to tackling climate change and send them an email to raise your concerns.
- Use our resources with your church or community to spread the word and get others involved.
- Find a date that suits your group in September or October and pencil in an hour or two to visit your local branch of Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds or RBS. Between us, we’re going to make sure we visit a bank every day this autumn.
- Order your Prudence the giant piggy bank poster and fill it with messages about why the Big Shift matters. You might want to remind the bank that climate change is already affecting the lives of people living in poverty, or about something in your community that is threatened if we don’t act now to stop burning fossil fuels.
- On your chosen date in September or October, get together and take Prudence to the bank, along with a message for the CEO. Take your picture outside, share it on social media, and ask the staff at the branch to pass on your message to the CEO. Send your pictures to your local newspaper along with a press release to make sure the banks can’t ignore us.
