Zambia vs Blackrock
In April, Zambia will go head-to-head with the largest investment company in the world, BlackRock.
Zambia is in the middle of a huge debt crisis. Their debt repayments are already more than the country’s health, education and social spending combined.
Yet Blackrock, one of Zambia’s biggest lenders in 2020, refused the request to suspend debt repayments during the pandemic.
It’s a real David vs Goliath situation.
Zambia literally can’t keep up with the repayments so negotiations will now take place over whether the debts are paid, or Zambia can fund public services.
Zambian campaigners are calling for debt cancellation but what BlackRock doesn’t know is that they’re not alone. Thousands of us around the world are campaigning with them.
