If you’ve been fundraising for Christian Aid Week this year, you'll know them. Frida Moraa and Berlinda Kasudi and the team at Beacon of Hope welcomed us. And we witnessed the urban gardening project that has transformed their lives.
It’s rare that as the Head of our church and community work in the UK, I get to meet our partners globally. And at the end of the visit, I thanked them for letting us share their stories with you.
'God is good!', I said.
'All the time!', the community responded.
'All the time!', I said.
“God is good!' said the community.
And then, 'And that’s His nature, wow!'
It’s not too late to help families in Kenya grow food, protect their children from hunger and build a better future. Donate today and be part of the hope.
God’s nature is to be good
That call and response refrain is what we say at the start of every service at my church in south London. But I had never heard that phrase 'And that’s God’s nature – wow!'. God’s nature is to be good. We know that in the way that our sisters and brothers – both locally and globally – live out their lives in loving action. Reflecting the love of God in their own communities.
I saw this love in action in Nairobi.
The love that Frida and Belinda feel deeply for their families. The determination that their children and grandchildren should have the dignity God to gives to all of us. A dignity that means that they should not go hungry. A dignity that means they should go to school.
I saw this love in action from Beacon of Hope as well.
Christian Aid Week is a reminder of the blessing of our partners. Locally based organisations who know the challenges and the opportunities that the communities they work with face. Who know that the answers lie within those communities and the individuals within them. Who love those communities so much. And who work to see them liberated from poverty and injustice.

And I saw this love in action in the many churches I visited throughout Christian Aid Week.
Churches that raised funds. Raised their voices by speaking out about debt injustice in Kenya. And raised awareness – getting their wider communities involved in seven days to make a difference. People old and young coming together out of love. A love for their global neighbour. A sense that God is calling them to put this love into action.

Seeds of hope
We live in divisive times. Times when it sometimes feels like there is no hope. But change is possible. I’ve seen it. In the informal settlements of Nairobi, women like Frida and Belinda are literally growing seeds of hope. And in churches across this land, through simple acts of hope, we walk with them. Praying, giving, and campaigning for the world God is calling every one of us into.
These million acts of hope show that another world is possible. And through Christian Aid Week and beyond, we can be people of hope. Putting God’s love into action every day.
