Walking St Augustine's Way

Sleeping in the churchyard
Gill takes shelter in a church yard during her walk.

Gill Mead and her friend raised an impressive £500 for Christian Aid by walking St Augustine's Way from Canterbury to Ramsgate.

It should have been simple. As Gill says: 'What could be more idyllic than strolling through the Kent countryside in the warm sunshine - and then to spend the night in a picturesque medieval church snug in a box pew, lulled by owls?'

The reality was a bit more challenging!

Gill recalls: 'Footpaths were blocked by nettles, or brambles, or ploughed over, often having no relation to our map; or situated under sprinklers where the farmer was lovingly watering his spring onions. The church was so cold we spent most of the night refilling our hot water bottles or swatting the vampire gnats.'

So a big thank you to both and we hope you have recovered!
