Helping others in need is a key part of living out our faith. Scripture calls us to act with generosity, kindness and compassion towards those who are struggling. True compassion is more than sympathy — it moves us to take action and offer support when others face hardship.

Here are seven Bible verses that remind us why helping others in need matters.

Respond to God's call to help others

Just as God’s love came through a humble birth, your generosity can help a mother fleeing conflict to buy the nutritious save her child’s life.

What the Bible says about compassion and helping others:

  1. Galatians 6:9 - 'So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up.'

  2. Matthew 25:35 - 'For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.'

  3. Isaiah 58:10 - '...If you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday.'

  4. Proverbs 19:17 - 'Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and will be repaid in full.'

  5. Hebrews 13:16 - 'Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.'

  6. Proverbs 3:27 - 'Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.'

  7. Ephesians 2:10 - 'For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.'

How you can help others today

When violence tore through her village in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Chance was forced to flee with her baby in her arms

Now living in a displacement camp, she works tirelessly to provide what little she can — earning just a few coins a day to feed her children.

This Christmas, your compassion can help mothers like Chance rebuild their lives with dignity. Your gift could provide food, safety and hope for families who have lost everything.

Make compassion part of your daily life

Helping others is a way of life that requires patience, understanding and selflessness. As we reflect on these Bible verses, let us ask God for the wisdom and strength to notice those who are struggling and respond with love.

Whether through a kind word, a helping hand or a moment of generosity, even the smallest act can bring light into someone's life.

'The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.' - John 1:5

A prayer for a compassionate heart

Loving Father,

Thank You for Your endless love and mercy.

Help us to see the world as You do,

with hearts that are open and hands ready to serve.

May we follow the example of the Lord Jesus Christ,

showing kindness to those who are struggling

and standing up for those who are oppressed

Let our lives be a reflection of the words of the Lord,

so that through us, others may come to know Your love

In Jesus’ name,

Amen
Share hope this Christmas

At Christmas, we celebrate the gift of Jesus — God’s love made real. Join us in sharing that love by helping families in the DRC rebuild, recover and find peace.
