At Christian Aid, hope is at the heart of everything we do. The light guides us through challenging times and the promise of a better future. The Bible is full of verses that remind us of the hope we have in God. A hope that sustains us, strengthens us, and inspires us to keep moving forward.

Here are 10 Bible verses about hope that encourage us to trust in God’s faithfulness and to share that hope with others.

What does the Bible say about hope?

Hope is one of the central promises of Scripture — the assurance that God’s love and mercy are constant, even in our darkest moments

  1. Jeremiah 29:11 - 'For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.'

  2. . Psalm 9:18 - 'For the needy shall not always be forgotten, nor the hope of the poor perish forever.'

  3. Isaiah 40:31 - 'But those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.'

  4. Hebrews 10:23 - 'Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful.'

  5. Romans 5:3-5 - 'And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us.'

  6. Lamentations 3:22–24 – ‘The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.”’

  7. Hebrews 6:19 – ‘We have this hope, a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters the inner shrine behind the curtain.’

  8. Romans 15:13 – ‘May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.’

  9. Psalm 33:20–22 – ‘Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and shield. Our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.’

  10. 1 Peter 1:3 – ‘By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.’

Hope in action: Chance’s story

When conflict forced Chance to flee her home in the Democratic Republic of Congo, she escaped with nothing but her baby in her arms. Now living in a camp, she works hard to provide what little she can.

Hope is the thread that carries families like Chance’s through crisis. By giving this Christmas, you can help turn that hope into a future — providing food and shelter as they rebuild.

A prayer for hope around the world

God of all creation,

you breathe hope into every corner of the earth.

Forgive us when we lose sight of your promises,

and let our vision for the future be filled

with glimpses of your kingdom,

where peace and justice reign,

even in places of suffering and conflict.

God of compassion,

you call us to be bearers of hope.

We lift those suffering around the world to you,

those who long for safety, healing, and peace.

Strengthen us to stand alongside them,

and inspire us to work for a world where hope prevails,

and all may flourish.

Spirit of life,

fill every heart with hope.

Renew our strength to believe in your promises,

and give us the courage, wisdom, and will

to work towards a world transformed by your love.

Amen
Pray, sing and stand in hope

Let hope inspire action

Hope is not just about waiting; it’s also about acting. As Christians, we must share the hope we’ve received with others, especially those who are struggling. Whether through prayer, service, or advocacy, we can be a light of hope in the world, reflecting the love and compassion of God.

At Christian Aid, we believe that hope is powerful. It's the driving force behind our work. and brings lasting change to those in need. Let’s continue to hope, pray, and act for a better world, trusting in the promises of God.

Psalm 9:18 - 'For the needy shall not always be forgotten, nor the hope of the poor perish forever.'

Faith in action through giving

As we lift our prayers for peace, we can also be part of God’s answer. Your gift today can help families like Chance’s, who’ve lost everything to war, buy the food, medicines and essential supplies they need to survive.
