Advent is a time for reflection in the run up to Christmas. It’s a chance to hold in our hearts those in crisis and offer them hope. Try out one of these 12 acts of giving and enjoy the rich and rewarding benefits of giving.
1. Light an Advent candle
Light a candle for hope and take a moment to discover what those words mean to you. You might want to take this time to pray for families in the DRC who have had to flee their homes with nothing and are now left to rebuild.
2. A little goes a long way
For every day of Advent, take one new item you own away. This could be a can of food, toiletries, or warm socks, and store them into a box. After 12 days, drop your box to a local food bank or shelter for an act of giving that won’t break the bank.
Christmas is a special time wherever you are. Give today and spread joy and hope to those that need it the most.
3.Create your own carol service
A good carol service is a popular Christmas tradition. It’s a great way to connect with your community, fundraise and make friends. You can organise your own Big Sing using our carol sheets and Christmas resources and reflect on the meaning of your favourite carols.
4. Write some Christmas cards
Swap e-cards for pens and make a vow to write heartfelt Christmas cards to your family, friends, or even neighbours who might feel lonely this time of year. It’s one of the simplest ways to spread joy to those around you.
5. Volunteer for the day
This Christmas, give the gift of you. That might involve signing up to help a shelter, wrapping gifts for a charity or volunteering at church. You’ll be surprised at how good it feels.
6. Do a random act of kindness
Small acts of generosity can send ripples of hope and joy. It could mean buying someone a coffee, taking time out your day to listen to someone struggling or making a donation.
7. Create a Christmas prayer book
Have a go at creating a Christmas and New Year prayer book. A customised prayer book is a great thoughtful gift for a loved one, follow the steps to create a unique book that offers guidance, comfort and opportunities for reflection.
8. Write an Advent gratitude list
Take some time out your day to look at what you’re grateful for and give thanks. Gratitude transforms the way we experience Christmas — and reminds us of what we have and what truly matters.
9. Go local
Whether it’s buying Christmas gifts from local and independent shops, supporting a local fayre or buying presents from charity shops, there’s lots of ways to help your gifting go a bit further.
Your generosity can help families in crisis rebuild their lives this festive season. With every gift, you provide food, shelter, healthcare and support to families fleeing conflict and violence.
10. Have a moment of prayer
Try having a night off screens and enjoying a moment of stillness. You might want to pray for those rebuilding after conflict or reflect on some Bible verses about hope. Advent is meant to slow us down before the Christmas rush after all.
11. Write a 2026 plan of action
December is the perfect time to take stock and dedicate some time to jot down the actions you want to take next year. These could include different themes and goals, from taking part in a fundraising charity race to volunteering.
12. Leave a gift in your will
A powerful way to make an impact is to leave a small gift in your will to charity. It’s never too early to think about wills and there are will writing resources to help you do that, from Will Aid to Farewill. Get your free Gift in Wills guide to learn more.
