Serving others is at the heart of Christian faith. Across the Bible, believers are called to love their neighbour, stand with the vulnerable and work for justice.
But what does that look like in practice?
Millions of people around the world still live in poverty. For many Christians, responding to poverty is not optional. It is a core part of living out their faith.
Today, churches and Christian organisations respond in practical and powerful ways. From charity and fundraising to advocacy and long-term development, the Christian response to poverty takes many forms.
Across the world, communities are working to overcome poverty and injustice. Put your faith to action and make a difference for global neighbours living in poverty.
How Christianity responds to poverty
The Bible speaks often about justice, compassion and caring for people in need.
Throughout the Old and New Testaments, God’s people are called to defend the vulnerable and act with generosity and love. Christians respond to poverty in several ways:
Helping people in need through charity and humanitarian support
'How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?'
- 1 John 3:17
Working for justice by challenging the causes of poverty
'Speak out for those who cannot speak, for the rights of all the destitute.
Speak out, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.'
- Proverbs 31:8–9
Supporting communities to build long-term solutions
'Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.'
- Galatians 6:2
Praying and worshipping as part of faith in action
'Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with thanksgiving.'
- Colossians 4:2
Jesus’ teachings place service at the centre of faith
'But it is not so among you; instead, whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many.'
- Mark 10:43-45
In another well-known passage, Jesus reminds his followers that caring for others is part of following him:
'...Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it to me.'
- Matthew 25:40
These teachings shape how many Christians understand their responsibility to respond to poverty and injustice.

Why poverty matters to Christians
Christians believe every person is created in the image of God and has inherent dignity and worth.
Yet poverty continues to deny millions of people access to the things they need to live safely and thrive – from food and clean water to education and healthcare. Many are caught in cycles of poverty made worse by conflict, climate change and inequality.
Because of this, in the face of so much suffering, many Christians believe faith should lead to action.
Our faith should stir us to act, not out of guilt, but out of love. Poverty isn't a distant issue; it’s here in our local communities and across the globe. As follows of Christ, we’re not called to look away, but to confront it head-on.
Responding to poverty is not only about charity. It is also about justice – challenging the systems and inequalities that keep people trapped in hardship.

Put your faith into action today
At Christian Aid, we believe a fairer world is possible – and you’re part of making it happen. When we allow ourselves to be lead by mercy, act justly and walk humbly, we become part of God’s work to bring about a world of fairness, dignity and hope.
For more than 80 years we have worked with local partners to support communities facing poverty and injustice. Together we respond to crises, tackle the causes of poverty and campaign for lasting change.
But none of this work happens alone.
When people give, act and pray together, we can help build a world where everyone is valued and no one is left behind.
