This Volunteers' Week, we are celebrating the joys of volunteering!

Volunteers' Week is an annual Week of honouring the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering in their communities.

In their own words, hear some of our inspiring Christian Aid stories and their advice for anyone thinking of taking the leap into volunteering. It may inspire you to start your journey!

I’m excited to further my experience and continue to volunteer with Christian Aid throughout the Summer.

Iona MacGregor, a second-year Politics and Sociology student at Leeds University, has supported Christian Aid during our annual Student Takeover in February of this year and is coming back in the summer as a project volunteer for the Central Supporter Engagement Team, offering her insight into engaging students in the DIY Fundraising Space.

Iona said, "Christian Aid is an amazing charity that has always been prevalent throughout my life. I was so excited when I was made aware of the opportunity to get involved. The Team is amazing and I love the creative aspects of the work. I am excited to further my experience and continue to volunteer with Christian Aid throughout the Summer".

Project volunteering provides young people with a stepping stone into the charity sector, providing an opportunity to make connections and find out how a charity is run. Many of our project volunteers go on to employment within Christian Aid.

Phil Juggins, Media Volunteer

Phil is a media volunteer with the charity, as well as chairman of the Yeovil and District Christian Aid Group.

He first came across the organisation in the 1970s and volunteered as a Christian Aid Week collector and church representative.

When he retired in 2016, he saw an ad for the role of Media Volunteer to help with photos and stories in the South West.

Phil explained he volunteers for about half a day a week on average although it varies throughout the year and can be spread out around the week.

“Working from home online fits in well with a flexible retired lifestyle.

“I might for instance gather information for a press release one week, develop the document with the Christian Aid supporters and staff involved, by email, and then be ready to meet local Press deadlines early the next week.”

Phil said volunteering is a great way of discovering new skills and adapting existing ones.

He encouraged people to sign up for a role, saying: “Find what suits you, fits into your lifestyle and motivates you through what is achieved… Keep an eye out for the right volunteering opportunity and don’t be afraid to give it a go.”
