Christian Aid was founded in 1945 by the British and Irish churches to help refugees at the end of the Second World War and churches in Wales have been part of the movement from the early days.

Today, we are the official relief, development and advocacy agency of 41 sponsoring churches in Britain and Ireland, uniting in hope and solidarity with communities globally to tackle extreme poverty and injustice.

Our sponsoring churches in Wales

As well as working in close partnership with Cytûn:Churches Together in Wales, our sponsoring churches in Wales include:

We are accountable and answerable to our sponsoring churches for all we do. Through regular meetings and ongoing partnerships, we work with and through them – locally, regionally, and nationally.

Christian Aid Cymru National Advisory Committee

Our Christian Aid Wales National Advisory Committee, includes representatives from our sponsoring churches and Cytûn, and guides Christian Aid’s vision in Wales. The committee is chaired by Rev Andrew Sully who is also a Christian Aid Trustee.

Working in partnership makes a world of difference

Our sponsoring churches and partners in Wales enable pioneering work around the world. These types of projects have been supported by Welsh church denominational appeals and by the Welsh Government’s Wales and Africa Grant Scheme over the past few years.

Our third sector partners and networks in Wales

We cannot reach our vision of an end to poverty alone. We work in partnership with others in Wales to amplify our voices and to mobilise greater action on climate justice, debt justice, peace and global solidarity. These networks include:

  • The Wales Overseas Agencies Group(WOAG): a group of international development organisations in Wales who speak with a unified voice to influence and drive action on international justice and solidarity.
  • DEC Cymru: When a Disasters Emergency Committee appeal is launched, we work with DEC member charities in Wales to mobilise a response from the Welsh public.

  • Global Climate Justice Cymru - in line with the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act, we work to ensure that climate action in Wales is grounded in a deep understanding of global responsibility, making a positive contribution to global well-being and positioning Wales as an active voice on the world stage.

  • Climate Cymru: a movement made up of over 400 diverse organisations from across Welsh society with a shared desire for urgent and fair action to address climate and nature emergencies.
