The debt and climate poverty trap
In low-income countries, the costs of climate breakdown and government debt are colliding to trap millions of people in poverty.
Unjust debts are destroying lower-income countries' ability to invest in education and healthcare. Meanwhile the climate crisis leaves people fighting to feed their families as precious crops fail, and floods and storms destroy neighbourhoods.
Meanwhile, the richest and most polluting companies and individuals are amassing record levels of wealth. This is unjust.
The UK Government can help repair the harm being caused. It could make reckless polluters pay for climate action. It could make greedy lenders cancel debts.
Polluters and lenders are profiting from poverty
The UK government is letting them get away with it. We can change that.
Most debts owed by low-income countries to private companies are governed by UK law. Many big polluters, such as fossil fuel companies are headquartered in the UK.
It's time to make polluters pay for the climate crisis they've caused, and for lenders to cancel exploitative debts.

The debt crisis in Zambia is severely affecting our communities. We can’t afford to eat three times a day, and we can’t afford to address the devastating impacts of the climate crisis affecting us. Instead of supporting Zambian people, the global north is allowing companies like BlackRock to profiteer from our debt. We need urgent debt cancellation so we can prioritise the needs of my people, not the profits of private companies.
