Why do I need to write to my MP? Isn’t there a ceasefire now?

Whilst the fragile ceasefire in Gaza has brought the release of hostages and detainees, there is so much more required to bring peace. A lasting peace must be rooted in justice.

By contacting your MP you can help compel the UK Government to work for a just peace.

What can I ask my MP to do?

Whether you write, email or meet them, urge your MP to call on the UK Foreign Secretary to do these four things.

  • Ban all UK trade with and investment in illegal Israeli settlements.

Settlements are Israeli towns, illegally constructed in the occupied Palestinian territory. These illegal settlements force Palestinian communities off their land making them homeless and often jobless.

  • Suspend the existing UK-Israel Trade Agreement, ending the UK’s preferential trade terms with Israel.

The UK continues to enable the illegal occupation of Palestinian territory through its special trading relationship with Israel. The occupation results in poverty and insecurity for Palestinians.

  • Suspend all arms sales to Israel, until all violations of international law cease.

The UK Government has a legal duty to prevent the sale of arms and their parts to parties where there is a risk they will be used to violate international law.

  • Ramp up its support for UN-led humanitarian relief, and demand Israel lifts all remaining aid restrictions on Gaza

Despite the ceasefire the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire. Clean water, food, medical care and shelter are still desperately needed.

Tips for contacting your MP

Whether you’re writing a letter, emailing, or meeting your MP, follow the tips below to make the biggest impact

  • Introduce yourself as their constituent.
  • Say why the situation in occupied Palestinian territory and Israel is important to you.
  • Ask them to act – outline the key asks listed above.
  • Share the MP briefing - If you’re writing to your MP share Christian Aid's latest parliamentary briefing.
  • Keep it short - If you are writing, 400 words is more than enough. If you’re meeting with them speak for no more than 5 minutes, this way you have time for discussion.
  • Hold them to account - If you’ve written to or emailed your MP, ask them to respond. If you meet, get a commitment from them while you’re there.
