Massive flash floods have swept through communities on the Nepal-Tibet border. At least 1000 people have been killed. More than 3900 are missing. Homes have been destroyed, roads swamped and bridges swept away.

What’s happening in Nepal and Tibet?
On 26 August 2026, a devastating flash flood occurred in the Bhote Koshi River. This was created by a powerful surge of water and debris from upstream, reportedly caused by a landslide. There are fears that further floods could cause more destruction.
Entire areas have been cut off. Travel has been brought to a halt in parts of the country. More than 3900 people are missing, including workers, tourists and pilgrims. Families urgently need clean water, food, shelter and medical care.
Rescue and evacuation operations are underway, but remote communities remain cut off, and local authorities are struggling to cope with the scale of the disaster.
