Christian Aid in the Philippines

Christian Aid’s work in the Philippines focuses on resilience and justice to address the persistent poverty and inequality aggravated by disasters and the risks of climate change. Building on its previous work around economic policies, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, mining and urban poverty, it aims to achieve justice and resilience for the poor in the country.

More than half of the population of the Philippines live in disaster prone areas, and the country has the second greatest risk of disaster worldwide, according to the World Risk Report 2014.

The Philippines experiences around 20 typhoons a year and, being in the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, is at high risk of earthquakes. Twenty of the largest cities are situated on the coast and are most at risk of rising sea levels and extreme climate conditions.
