In Nigeria we work on...
Community health and HIV
We improve the health of poor and marginalised people, particularly women, children and people with compromised immunity through our integrated community-based health promotion and health governance. We help to strengthen systems in response to community health issues in Nigeria including HIV and malaria, empowering people to take responsibility for their own health.
We are helping communities to raise their voices to demand accountability, through advocacy, promoting engagement between people and government and strengthening community structures. Through this, we improve government accountability and responsiveness to the needs of poor and marginalised people.
Through gender inclusive programming, we work to improve gender equity and the participation of women and girls in development activities. We challenge social and cultural norms which ensure women and girls in Nigeria suffer systematic disadvantage.
Increasing insecurity and violence, mostly in the northern part of the country, has brought a surge in humanitarian situations in the country. We respond when and where we can, based on the availability of funding. We also build the capacity of local partners to respond to humanitarian needs as they arrive.

Where we work
We work in areas where the need is greatest and we have strong existing partnerships. Currently, we operate in eight states – Adamawa, Anambra, Benue, Borno, Edo, Gombe, Kaduna and Plateau – and the Federal Capital Territory. We operate out of our country office in Abuja and we have three field offices in Anambra, Benue and Edo.
Community health and HIV
The Strengthening Community Health and HIV Response project, funded by UK aid, used an integrated approach to deliver community health and HIV responses through trained community-based agents. Since 2010, more than 1.6 million people in rural communities have been supported to take up health services and adopt preventive health practices.
Our partner, the Association of Women Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (ASWHAN), has contributed to the successful campaign for legislation to prohibit discrimination and provide legal protection for the 3.4 million Nigerians living with HIV.
Voice to the People (V2P) has supported communities in Anambra state to hold governments and their leaders to account, take part in decision-making and demand rights and services. The UK aid-funded project has reached 2.4 million people and supported 60,000 citizens to effectively hold duty bearers to account.
Malaria affects 35 million Nigerians and results in 300,000 childhood deaths each year. Our partners have distributed more than 930,000 mosquito nets, reaching almost 2 million people, and provided follow-up education. There has been a significant drop in malaria in target communities.
We are a founding member of the Tax Justice and Governance Platform, which launched in 2012. It calls for an effective, fair and progressive tax system and for government revenues to be spent on improving essential services.
Through our humanitarian interventions in north-east Nigeria, we have improved the food security and livelihoods of 27,532 internally displaced persons in Adamawa, Borno and Gombe States Nigeria. We also constructed water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities and conducted WASH sensitisation in communities in Adamawa, Borno and Benue States.
Early warning and disaster preparedness in Nigeria
This project aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness in Nigeria by improving Early Warning and Early Response (EW-ER) systems.
ECHO humanitarian assistance Nigeria
An EU humanitarian aid (ECHO) funded project providing emergency assistance to people affected by armed conflict in Borno State, north east Nigeria.
The Global Fund: fighting malaria in Nigeria
The Global Fund is helping to strengthen health systems and to improve malaria treatment and prevention in Nigeria.
UK aid strategic funding (PPA)
In 2011, Christian Aid was awarded funding for humanitarian and development work under DFID’s Programme Partnership Arrangement (PPA).
