September 2010: Growing up in a slum

With no access to essential services like water and sanitation, children in Nairobi's slums face a struggle to simply survive.

Two weeks into a new term for children across the UK and Ireland, we look back at drawings made by children living in the Matopeni slum, Kenya. Their pictures show the reality of life in a settlement that is desperate even by slum standards, and their hopes for how Christian Aid's project to improve the drains and bring clean water to the settlement will change their lives.

Last year, Blessing Kithuku, 7, suffered a bout of typhoid so severe that her family feared she would die. Her picture shows drains flooded with faeces. The pipes that supply water to the community run through these drains meaning water-borne diseases like typhoid are common.
