On 22 July 2014 Christian Aid joined the Girl Summit - a global movement to put an end to female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage.
We want to give girls back their right to a childhood, education and freedom of choice.
What we're calling for...
An end to female genital mutilation (FGM)
Female genital mutilation is a practice considered necessary in certain communities for a girl to be ready for marriage. It takes away a girl’s choice over her own body and can immediately cause infections, infertility and even death.
It is estimated that over the next decade FGM could lead to a lifetime of pain and trauma for an estimated 30 million girls worldwide.
An end to child, early and forced marriage (CEFM)
Child, early and forced marriage robs millions of young girls of their right to participate in, contribute to and benefit from society.
It is estimated that one in three girls in developing countries marries before the age 18, some of them are as young as eight.
Girls who give birth too young put themselves and their babies at risk and are likely to remain poor and disempowered throughout their life.
‘Women perform 66% of the world’s work yet earn only 10% of the income.’
‘Women make up 64% of the world’s illiterate.’
‘Less than 20% of the world’s parliamentarians are female.’
What we're doing
Christian Aid partners in Kenya, Egypt, Iraq and Afghanistan are working with communities to raise awareness of the risks involved with FGM and CEFM. We're challenging the social norms that perpetuate them.
Our global partner, the World YWCA is campaigning globally for an end to child marriage.
