Zimbabwe crisis

April 10 2008

Zimbabwe is on a precipice. Tensions mount with each passing day as voters await the result of last month’s elections.

But whether President Robert Mugabe continues to cling to power or is defeated after 28 years of rule, the reality for Zimbabwe’s people promises to be one of struggle for some time to come.

The economy has collapsed, with inflation at 165,000%. People are struggling to buy daily essentials. The job of rebuilding this country is monumental.

Christian Aid has supported partners in Zimbabwe since 1980. We have stood in solidarity with its people throughout and we will continue to support them through this latest crisis.

Even without the recent escalation in tensions, Zimbabwe needs our support.

It has the lowest life expectancy in the world – 37 for men and only 34 for women. Four million people are already facing severe food shortages. One in five adults is HIV-positive.

Christian Aid supports 17 partners in Zimbabwe working on HIV prevention and care, livelihoods and human rights.

When, in 2005 the Zimbabwe government began clearing thousands of people out of ‘slums’ by demolishing their homes, our partners responded by providing food and shelter for the homeless and  practical support for those who lost their livelihoods.

One partner, the Christian Alliance – a network of Christian leaders – helps empower people to speak out and take action in the face of injustice. Its members have been imprisoned and faced intimidation because of their work.

Today the people of Zimbabwe need your support. You can show your solidarity with them now and in the future by giving to our Zimbabwe fund.
