You help us to a climate bill win

01 April 2008

In a major victory for Christian Aid campaigners, all UK-listed companies face having to make annual reports on their carbon emissions after the government accepted an amendment to the Climate Change Bill.

The government conceded the key Christian Aid demand during the House of Lords debate on the bill on March 31.

If the amendment passes the House of Commons, companies that are listed on the London Stock Exchange will have to comply with the new reporting rules.

This is a major win for your campaigning: more than 20,000 of you emailed, texted and sent in postcards to Gordon Brown and MPs.

Mandatory reporting for companies was one of the key demands of Christian Aid's Cut the Carbon march last summer and of our climate change campaign since it launched in February 2007.

More to do

But while we've won an important concession we still need to keep up the pressure on getting a higher target on reducing Britain's carbon emissions by 2050.

The government's proposed 60% target just isn't going to do the job. We need an 80% reduction in UK emissions added to the climate bill if we are to avoid catastrophe.

So please continue to email your MP demanding an 80% cut.
