The final mile

02 October 2007

The Cut the Carbon marchers received a rapturous welcome as they completed the final leg of their epic 1,000 mile trek.

Despite the drizzle, over one thousand supporters turned out at City Hall at 12 noon to show their support for the march – the longest ever protest march in UK history.

Carrying placards calling on government and business to address climate change, the marchers crossed London Bridge, passed by the London Stock Exchange and arrived at St Paul’s for their final rally.

As they drummed and sang their way through the city of London, the marchers sent a loud and clear message to businesses in the Square Mile – act justly and reduce your carbon emissions.

With the marchers gathered outside St Paul’s, Christian Aid’s head of campaigns, Paul Brannen, introduced the marchers individually and praised the commitment and dedication they’ve shown over the past 80 days.

Rosalia Soley, 22, from El Salvador, addressed the crowd from the Christian Aid battle bus. Rosalia told the crowd: 'We have to stand together, as brothers and sisters, to make a difference. Act now!'
