Day 13: Saturday, 15 December

Christian Aid welcomes the last-minute agreement at the Bali climate change conference - but is dismayed that cast-iron targets were removed from the final text.

The deal will enable negotiations to start on a second phase of the Kyoto Protocol, which needs to be in place by 2012.

But the lack of crucial target figures for cutting carbon emissions in rich countries is a major disappointment.

Day 12: Friday, 14 December

The Bali climate conference has overrun its noon (4am GMT) deadline and is set to continue way into the night with US and EU delegations bitterly divided over targets for emissions cuts.

The EU is pressing for industrialised countries to commit to cutting emissions by 25-40% by 2020.

But the US is vehemently opposed to setting specific targets.

On Thursday, EU ministers had threatened to boycott a US-led climate summit next month unless the Bush administration gave its backing to binding emissions targets.

Christian Aid's Nelson Muffuh says it's crunch time in Bali:

As the day advances what I would very much like to see is for progressive countries step up the pressure and effectively push the US into an untenable isolationist corner.

As the bleary eyed delegates count down the hours leading up to the end of this epic conference, it is only natural that we also start evaluating whether the Bali Climate Change Conference was indeed a worthwhile moment in history or a dud.

The key to measuring its success is simple: does the final deal safeguard  sustainable development for the poor at the same time as securing the climate?
