Date: 21-28 January 2012
Thank you to everyone who held a Burns Supper for Christian Aid. We had people taking part not only all over Scotland but also England, Wales, Poland and Russia!!
The flagship event was a great success with all of the guests enjoying some fantastic Burns performances from Neil MacGillvary as well as some original writings from Kathy Galloway and Doug Gay.
The Hallanshankers were a roaring success for the ceilidh with all of the guests falling over one another while dancing. We're already looking forward to 2013!
How your supper made a difference
Holding a Burns Supper may seem like a small action to take in the face of global poverty, but you have helped to make a real difference in helping to transform the lives of people just like Sok Heng and Bo Ven.
Husband and wife Sok Heng and Bo Ven have lived in Takeo village in Cambodia since 2003 and receive support from Christian Aid Partner, Life with Dignity (LWD).
LWD gave Heng and Ven training, tools and seeds to establish their own fruit and herb plantation. They were able to install a well, meaning they are no longer dependent on unpredictable rains to water their trees and plants.
In just five years, they left a life of hunger behind them and are now able to produce enough food to live on with surplus to sell. Heng told Christian Aid, “Before we moved here, we were living in severe poverty in another province. The plot here belongs to a relative but it wasn’t being used, so we asked if we could move here.”
LWD identifies the poorest households in a community and, over an average of five years, it helps them attain knowledge, access and skills to lift them out of poverty. The aim is to help families become empowered, self-sufficient and independent from the local NGO after four to five years.
