Theatre for a change

Christian Aid has received £367,600 from the Scottish Government to fund its partner, Theatre for a Change from Nov 2008 until Oct 2011.

This is part of the Scottish Government's commitment to fund projects in Malawi.

Training the teachers

Theatre for a Change is an exciting programme, based in Lilongwe, Malawi, that uses drama to educate trainee teachers and marginalised people living in communities about HIV/AIDS.

The style of working is very engaging - individuals and groups are encouraged through drama and discussion to think about how they experience the world.

Through this exploration, participants generate the awareness and ability to bring about practical and positive changes in their own lives and gain a voice in society.

Scotland and Malawi link up online

Teachers in Malawi are facing critical problems with HIV and AIDS - every day, two teachers die from AIDS related illnesses and prevalence rates among teachers are running at nearly 30%.

This leaves class sizes of over 200 children per teacher, and many children are orphaned by the disease.

Scotland has its own problems with sexual health - there are large numbers of unplanned pregnancies among teenagers. In both countries there is a real need for effective sex education.

So, Christian Aid is also funding an online exchange programme between trainee teachers in Malawi and Scotland with the aim of exchanging best practice in sex education.

This forum is for teachers from the two countries to exchange their experiences and learn from each other using a variety of media, including video and podcasts.
