Monthly prayers

1 May (John 20:19-31)

Living God,
You appeared to your disciples in their hour of fear,
And offered them your peace to still their hearts.
May we open our arms
To be living hope in the world today,
Bringing peace to those in living in fear.
Give us courage to be bold in what we believe;
May we hold firm to your promise of life and hope,
And strive for a new world, free from poverty, injustice and conflict.

8 May (Luke 24:13-35)

Risen Lord Jesus,
As made yourself known in the breaking of bread
And the disciples’ eyes were opened,
Help us know your presence
And to look on your creation with open eyes and hearts.
May we not be tempted by greed and corruption,
May we recognise where your creation has become disfigured by poverty,
May we be true ambassadors for a fairer world,
May we see the world with eyes of love.

15 May - The Christian Aid Week prayer

For laughter where there were tears;
For resilient communities more able to withstand disasters;
For voices speaking out against injustice,
which were previously silenced;
For feasting where there was hunger;
For all the ways that Christian Aid is helping
to transform communities,
enabling our sisters and brothers to lead fuller lives,
Thanks be to God.
We are a part of that.
Thanks be to God!

22 May (John 14:6)

God of love,
In you is truth and in you is life.
Help us to treasure your gift of life.
Forgive us when we reject you,
When the tempting gods of growth and possession and appearance
are easier to follow,
When speaking of what we own makes us more popular,
Or does not take so much courage,
Or does not lead to crucifixion.
Help us to live our lives by the rhythms of your grace.
Let our belief be a way of life
Let our way of life be our generosity to the world.

29 May (John 14:15-21)

A prayer from South Africa (slightly adapted)

Lord God, give us your spirit of courage,
That we may be open in our concern for our neighbour.
Give us your spirit of challenge,
That we may not accept silence and prejudice without question.
Give us your spirit of compassion,
That we may see the world through their eyes.
Give us your spirit of gentleness,
That we may listen to those who cry out to us for understanding.
Give us your spirit of truth,
That we may be bold in uncovering the injustice of the world.
Lord God, with the help and guidance of your Holy Spirit,
Lead us forward, in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, we pray.
Amen.
