Monthly prayers

4 August (Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost)

'And he said to them, "Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions."' (Luke 12:15)

God of grace and truth,
We give thanks for the life rich in your sight.

Not a life of luxury
but a life with enough
for freedom from fear

Not a life of possession
but a life full of wonder
to delight in each day

Not a driven life
but a life freely-given
and free to receive

Not a life without meaning
but a life of being needed
and not taken for granted

Not a quiet life
but a life full of passion
for justice and peace

This is the rich life you offer
Give us grace to receive and to share it.

11 August (Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost)

'Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.' (Luke 12:34)

Generous God,
we offer you back the riches of our lives,
our insights for reflection,
our intentions for action,
our money, time and talents.
In you and through you,
let them be healing, nourishing, serving
in the life of the world.

Touch us with your loving and joyful spirit,
deliver us to be your new creation
and sharers in your creativity
so that we may be people who choose true wealth.

18 August (Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost)

'You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?' (Luke 12:56)

O God, source of all wisdom and understanding,
have mercy on your divided and quarrelsome people.

Because we have knowledge but lack self-knowledge,
because we speak of peace but depart from the paths of peace,
because we say one thing but do another,
Lord have mercy on us.

By your justice, hold us to account,
in your kindness deliver us from evil,
through your love restore us to right relationship,
that we may live with undivided hearts
centred on you.

25 August (Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost)

'…immediately she stood up straight and began praising God.' (Luke 13:13)

God, power of the powerless,
as you raised up a woman bent low beneath an afflicting spirit,
even against those who would prolong her suffering,
grant that we may never ignore the distress of those
it is within our power to assist.

For revealing yourself in community
for laying bare the wounds of oppression and injustice,
for bringing us healing through the work of justice and mercy
for inspiring us and firing us with courage to act
we give great thanks.
