Monthly prayers

February

1 February (Fourth Sunday after Epiphany)

'The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you shall heed such a prophet.' (Deuteronomy 18:15)

Beckoning God -
who called the rich to travel towards poverty,
the wise to embrace your folly,
the powerful to know their own frailty;
who gave to strangers a sense of homecoming in an alien land
and to stargazers true light and vision as they bowed to earth -
we lay ourselves open to your signs for us.

Stir us with holy discontent over a world
which gives its gifts to those
who have plenty already
whose talents are obvious
whose power is recognised;
and help us
both to share our resources with those who have little
and to receive with humility the gifts they bring to us.

Rise within us, like a star,
and make us restless
till we journey forth
to seek our rest in you.

Kate Compston, in Bread of Tomorrow, edited by Janet Morley, SPCK / Christian Aid, 1992

8 February (Fifth Sunday after Epiphany)

'...but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength...' (Isaiah 40:38)

Dear God,
untie the knots that are in my mind, my heart and my life.
Remove the 'have nots', 'cannots' and 'do nots'.
Erase the 'will nots', 'may nots' that may find a home in my heart.
Release me from the 'could nots', 'would nots', 'should nots' that obstruct my life.
And most of all, dear God,
I ask that you remove from my mind, my heart and my life,
All of the 'am nots' that I have allowed to hold me back.
Especially the thought that I am not good enough.

15 February (Last Sunday after Epiphany)

'For it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness", who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.' (2 Corinthians 4:6)

God of creation
we live in the world you have made.
Give us generous hearts to share your wealth with others.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done.

God of power,
help us to remember that you can do impossible things.
Inspire us to work with you for change in our society.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done.

God of hope,
be present in our communities.
Give us the strength to show your love right here.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done.

God of love,
you bring us healing and comfort.
Come close to those who need your peace.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done.

God of truth,
draw us into your story of hope.
Challenge us to speak out for justice.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done.

22 February (First Sunday in Lent)

'I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.' (Genesis 9:13)

Blessings Prayer

God of blessing,
we thank you that you paint your covenant
in rainbow colours across the skies,
that your covenant embraces us all;
animals and earth included,
an inheritance of blessing and sustainability,
handed on as a blessing to future generations.

God of blessing,
may we ensure that the blessing does not stop with what we receive,
but that all are able to enjoy your blessing equally.
Whether from the global North or the global South,
may there be goats and cows in abundance
to bless families and whole communities with financial security
for all earth’s children and their children's children.

God of blessing,
bless us and show us how we can be a blessing to others.
