Monthly prayers

2 August (Tenth Sunday after Pentecost)

'"...For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." They said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always."' (John 6:33-34)

Merciful God,
Give us our daily bread
Pesticides that can slowly kill us,
Forced and child labour that is against all human dignity,
People displaced by the soya plantations to feed cattle in Europe,
A degraded environment because the eucalyptus plantations take all vitamins from the soil,
Young people living in the favelas because their land must produce agro fuel for the cars and the consumerism of a few.

Give us our daily bread
Produced by
Small producers
Thriving cooperatives,
Dignified work of all women,
Environmentally sustainable options such as agro-ecology,
Happy families and smiley children with a future full of hope.
Thanks God.

9 August (Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost)

'Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."' (John 6:35)

O God,
you have made us creatures of this earth
hungry and thirsty and needy,
that you might satisfy all our longing with your abundant love.

Satisfy the hunger of our bodies for food and shelter,
health and human touch.

Satisfy the hunger of our spirits for dignity and freedom
in giving and receiving.

Satisfy the hunger of our minds to understand the world,
the reasons for its pain,
the ways we are connected to each other.

Satisfy the hunger of our hearts
that all who share this loving earth with us
shall share our satisfaction.

And satisfy the hunger of our hands
to help you make it so.

16 August (Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost)

'I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.' (John 6:51)

Give us today our daily bread.
Give us parents happy because their children have gone to bed with full stomachs.
Give us farmers who have won their land rights.
Give us the peace of people who can go home at last in safety.
Give us the pride of women who have worked together and got a fair price for their produce.
Give us the hospitality of people who have almost nothing but share it anyway.
Give us the shared pleasure of the meal that breaks a long emptiness, and the feast that follows shared work.
Give us the justice of eating.
Give us the joy of these good side effects.
Give us an 'us'.

Bread is never just bread.
Our Father, give us today our daily bread.

23 August (Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost)

'This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.' (John 6:58)

God, food of the poor;
Christ our bread,
give us a taste of the tender bread
from your creation's table;
bread newly taken
from your heart's oven,
food that comforts and nourishes us.
A fraternal loaf that makes us human
joined hand in hand,
working and sharing.
A warm loaf that makes us a family;
sacrament of your body,
your wounded people.

30 August (Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost)

'But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves.' (James 1:22)

Help us to be doers of the word.
Doers of

Help us to see,
to reflect and to remember.
Help us to be doers who act
and not merely hearers.

So help us, Lord,
