Monthly prayers

4 October (Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost)

The poor and needy will praise you, O Lord.
Glory to the Father,
Glory to the Son,
Glory to the Holy Spirit, who spoke through the prophets.
God is my hope,
Christ is my refuge,
The Holy Spirit is my shelter.

St Auxentios, quoted in In God's Hands: Common Prayer for the World, edited by Hugh McCullum and Terry MacArthur, WCC Publications, 2006

11 October (Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost)

'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning?' (Psalm 22:1)

Our God, Our God,
Thank you,
Even in the suffering,
Even in the silence,
Even in the distance,
Even in the groaning,
You are present.
So, help us, God.

18 October (Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost)

Isaiah 53

Lord Jesus, by your cross and resurrection
deliver us
By your witness to the truth
deliver us
By your passion and death
deliver us
By your victory over the grave
deliver us
From the desire for power
deliver us
From the conspiracy of silence
deliver us
From the slaughter of the peoples
deliver us
From the nightmare of hunger
deliver us
From the peace that is no peace
deliver us
From security that is no security
deliver us
From the politics of terror
deliver us
From the plundering of the earth's resources
deliver us
From the dispossession of the poor
deliver us
From the despair of this age
deliver us
By the light of the gospel
give us peace
By the good news for the poor
give us peace
By your healing of our wounds
give us peace
By faith in your word
give us peace
By hunger and thirst for justice
give us peace
By the coming of the Kingdom
give us peace.

Linda Frewin and Tony Bartlett, from Bread of Tomorrow, edited by Janet Morley, SPCK / Christian Aid, 1992

25 October (Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost)

Psalm 126

Oh Lord, restore the fortunes of Syria,
And all those places destitute by conflict.
Inspire dreams of peace and
fill the streets with laughter again.
May those who leave in tears now
Return home with shouts of joy.
Let it be said among the nations,
'The Lord has done great things for them.'
