Monthly prayers

6 December (Second Sunday in Advent)

'By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.' (Luke 1:78-79)

Tender and merciful God,
May the dawn of hope
break in upon the night of despair in Nigeria
and wherever there is needless death around the world.
May the light of life
dispel the shadow of death caused by malaria
and all other preventable and treatable diseases.
May our feet always be guided
into the way of peace
bringing hope and life to whoever we can.
In Jesus name,

13 December (Third Sunday in Advent)

'Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.' (Philippians 4:6-7)

God who is near,
Send your peace to all who are worried this Advent
To the parents watching a child sick with malaria.
To the refugees watching for the shore.
To those still trapped in areas of conflict.
To those who do not know how they will feed their family tomorrow.
To all those who are crippled by financial worries,
to those who dread the sound of the key in the lock,
to those who are uncertain about the future and what the new year will bring.

Send your peace, God, not an ordinary peace,
but an unbelieveable peace,
a peace that surpasses all understanding.
A peace that will guard all hearts and minds in Christ Jesus
In whose name we pray,

20 December (Fourth Sunday in Advent)

'He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.' (Luke 1:52-53)

We join our voices yet with Mary's song
Singing of another world that is on its way
Of the demoted power obsessed
Of the restored oppressed
Of the loopholes closed
Of corruption exposed
Of abundance shared
and justice (de)served.
All are mercifully blessed.

Let it come, God,
your will be done,
your kingdom come,
on earth as in heaven.

27 December (First Sunday after Christmas Day)

'Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.' (Colossians 3:14)
You came down at Christmas, Lord,
Love, the word that took on flesh,
Love was clothed in swaddling bands
To bring perfect harmony on earth.

Clothe us now in love, Lord,
May love take on flesh in us
Bind us together in your name
To bring perfect harmony on earth.
