Monthly prayers

6 March (Fourth Sunday in Lent)

'But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him.' (Luke 15:20)

Beloved God,
with the eagerness of a child, you wait for our coming,
with the urgency of a lover, you long for our return
with the anxious heart of a father, your arms ache to hold us.
And we who would come
restless or reluctant,
weary or wary,
hurting and yet hoping beyond hope
stand still, undecided.
We are drawn by the promise of your kindness
but we are afraid of your disappointment,
of your judgement,
of your turning away from us.

But you are still there, still eager,
Now you are running to meet us with arms wide open.
The disappointment, the judgement, the turning away;
that's us, not you.
Forgive us and heal us
of all in us that recoils from our common humanity;
all pride, all fear,
all disgust, all shame.
You have given us such worth.
Help us to take all creation at your valuation
and to know ourselves precious and loved.

13 March (Fifth Sunday in Lent)

'Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus' feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.' (John 12:3)

Lord God,
You are the God who understands pain and hurt,
struggle and injustice.

Yet you also recognise love;
real, deep, heartfelt love,
love that hurts.
The love that you gave to us all so freely.

The vapours of perfume, gentleness and beauty were there.
The room was filled with the aroma of a love that was so deep,
it penetrated through the anger, the uncertainty and misplaced belief.
It oozed from your love through to the despair and unbelief of humanity.

Compassionate God,
help us to recognise all you did for us and let us really know the depth of your love.
Loving Lord,
be with us as we take every step on this journey.
As we travel through Holy Lent, walk with us;
be by our side
as we celebrate your resurrection.
Be with us this day and every day.

20 March (Palm Sunday)

'Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!' (Luke 19:38)

Loving God,
we thank you that you have called us to be part of this Palm Sunday crowd,
gathering to welcome Jesus.
Thank you for your love, coming to us again and again,
rising out of darkness into light and life.

Ride on into our lives,
and take your place as the humble and glorious king of our hearts.
Lord Jesus, ride on to your passion and cross,
to your empty tomb and your rising in triumph.
Ride on to raise up your church,
not just a crowd, but a new body for your service.
Ride on, King Jesus, to renew the earth in your image,
in compassion, justice and love; come to help us.

We ask in your name.

27 March (Easter Day)

'I have seen the Lord.' (John 20:18)

O Christ,
today, gloriously, joyfully, you live for ever
in the life of the world,
in the hearts of those who love you,
in the power of the Spirit to transcend even death.

May we who find in you our hope,
bear witness
that your risen body still carries the marks
of the world's violence, injustice and greed.
As we remember and rejoice,
help us to keep faith with all who today
suffer the outrages of violence, injustice and greed.

In our actions, in our prayers, in our choices and in our commitment,
teach us the true meaning of good news to the poor.
Alleluia, Christ is risen.
He is risen indeed!
