Monthly prayers

7 August (Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost)

'Be ready – for the son of man is coming at an unexpected hour.'
Not a threat to find fearful, nor a warning to make you wary...
Not the dark dream of an angry, little 'g' god, but a hopeful promise:
'You will find me in unexpected places. Look for me there.'

God, open the eyes of our hearts to the injustice our apathy gives life to.
Open the ears of our hearts to the corners where children cry.
Open our hands and our bank accounts to welcome those weary of wearing the burden of inequality.
God, who lives in unexpected places, take us there.

14 August (Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost)

Peace without justice is no peace at all.
Unity without love at its heart will not hold.
In these 'present times', help us to see the writing on the wall and read the truth.
When we walk away from the wounded world, saying 'nothing can be done', nothing will.

God, give us hearts to hear and heal our divisions.
Grow us into the people you dream.

21 August (Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost)

No trampling down, but building up.
No angry accusations; instead, there is love silently listening.
No-one bent over in grief or scraping in sorrow or bowing to oppression, it is Sabbath.
God of great grace let it be.

28 August (Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost)

Sit us down round your table, God – a circular affair, where no one takes more prominence or expects privilege.
Sit us down next to each other and we will be paid in stories and insight, laughter and tears – priceless things that never wear thin.
And when we rise again, may we take that communion with us and walk a new way.
