Matthew 5, 9-10

Something to read

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
New Revised Standard Version

Something to think about

What does it take for a peace-lover to become a peace-maker? Perhaps there is a call here to quarrel with those who love peace rather than make peace. This beatitude calls us towards something.

Peace making implies becoming something that throws up effort and anger and frustration and longing and dreams. The energy these things create is the work of peacemaking.

To be a peacemaker is to be someone who lives off the energy these things create for the sake of a world shaped closer to God’s Realm. Peacemaking is an active word that demands change.

Those ‘persecuted for righteousness sake’ makes partners of all those who live towards God’s Realm. It identifies the truth that the world is not always for justice but that the justice of the world will always be found among and between those who live in righteousness. And if you want a definition of righteousness then read the Beatitutes!

Something to do

If living peacemaking is directing the energy of longing to towards a more peaceful world, reflect on how you use your life-energy. In which direction does it move? What do you use it for? In what way are those things, peaceful? Does it need redirected? Can you talk about this to another?

Something to pray

God of Blessing,
with the energy of life,
may we life towards peace;
with the passion for future,
may we live towards peace;
with the grace of renewal,
may we live towards peace;
and may we accompany you,
God of all blessing,
God of all righteousness,
God of all life,
on the way
to growing your realm,
among all that hurts ,
and around all that is broken.
