New HIV report

07 July 2008

Our report examines the stigma, discrimination and prejudice faced by people living with HIV in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, and explores the social, economic and medical repercussions of HIV for those living with it.

In Sudan there is an urgent need for an action plan to address issues of stigma and discrimination affecting more than 300,000 people living with HIV, most of whom do not know they are infected.

It is estimated that only 1.5% of people with advanced HIV infection receive antiretroviral therapy – the medicine that would keep them alive and healthy.

There are 33 million people worldwide living with HIV, the vast majority in developing countries. Stigma is a global problem, and with many people too afraid to seek tests and treatment, it is one that costs lives.
