Gardening tips: Burkina Faso style

Drier spells, hosepipe bans - British gardeners are already having to adapt to a changing climate. But for farmers in Burkina Faso, climate change its not just an inconvenience, it's a threat to their survival.

The rains in the west African nation are becoming scarcer. When they do fall, they arrive with such force the top-soil is often washed away. Christian Aid is helping to train farmers in techniques which re-energise their land and prepare them for an uncertain future.

Below are some of their techniques - most of which you can try at home!

Zai technique

The Zai technique reduces run off and keeps water close to the roots of your plant. Simply dig a hole around 40cm deep and 50cm in diameter, add your plant and use the excess soil to build a wall around the hole. This will help to keep the water inside when it rains. Finally cover with organic fertiliser for extra nutrients and add a layer of mulch to help stop evaporation.
