Christian Aid has worked in the Middle East since the 1950s, and in Iraq since the 1990s. We work with long-term local partners to respond when and where necessary, to reach those most marginalised and in need.

Our programme in Iraq focusses on issues of displacement and conflict, working with internally displaced, refugees and vulnerable host communities.

Our aims

  • To provide needs-based, accountable, humanitarian relief, and strengthen community resilience
  • To contribute to building peaceful and inclusive societies, enabling a more just and secure future

Key achievements

Humanitarian response

Between 2014 and 2018, through our Iraq Crisis Appeal, we  reached more than 400,000 people, with food, clothes, hygiene kits, health services, cash assistance, protection support including specialised assistance to survivors and those at risk of sexual and gender-based violence, and social cohesion initiatives with young people

More recently, between October 2017 and September 2019, with funding from Bread for the World, we supported 470 young people in Kirkuk and Tikrit to access skills training and small business kits to help increase their opportunities for earning an income and to help transform their lives.

Since I have arrived here the host community have looked after me, I feel safer here than before. I am not scared that my children will get killed. I am getting food, but my future is a mystery; I do not know what is waiting for me.

- Sara Haqi, 26.
