Should you choose to give a gift of more than £5,000 in memory to our project in Kenya, you’ll be helping to fight against maternal mortality and the scourge of malnutrition.
In Narok County, one in eleven children dies before their fifth birthday, and three out of four people in rural areas live in poverty.
Families in these rural areas live far away from health centres - which are, all too often, already understaffed and under-resourced. The maternal mortality rate here is exceptionally high - 435 women die in childbirth for every 100,000 births, compared to just 12 in the UK – and chronic malnutrition of children under five is rising.
Improved access to healthcare
This project will improve women's access to emergency care during and after pregnancy by training over 1,000 new community health workers, who will visit the homes of expectant and new mothers twice a month.
New maternity units with specialist equipment will be built and an ambulance service will be set up to reach remote communities.
Voices of encouragement
Our local partners have set up mother-to-mother support groups and are training community health workers to give advice on breastfeeding, nutrition and child health. All in all, nearly 350,000 people will directly benefit from this programme.
Your gift in memory can help our partners support mothers and their babies - giving them the safe, healthy start in life that everyone deserves.
In addition, we have secured European Union funding for this project – meaning that every £1 of your gift is matched by £3 from the EU fund.
