Christian Aid partner, Emmanuel Hospital Association (EHA), helped to combat the spread of water-borne diseases by supplying water-purification tablets to people living in temporary shelters in the flood-stricken state of Bihar in northern India.
In August 2008, the giant River Kosi, which runs down from the Himalayas, burst its banks. The flood waters submerged huge areas of Bihar, sweeping away villages and destroying crops.
Hundreds of thousands of people were forced to seek shelter in temporary settlements in what the Indian prime minister, Manmohan Singh, described as a ‘national calamity’.
Although the Indian government installed hand pumps in the camps, many of the boreholes did not reach far enough into the ground to ensure the water was safe to drink.
As a result, incidences of diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases in the camps began to rise.
EHA responded by supplying water-purification tablets to the people living the temporary settlements.
It also provided instruction sessions to make sure local people knew how to use the tablets correctly.
