Cameron Demetre volunteers at our head office
Learning the value of philanthropy
Cameron Demetre recently joined us as a volunteer assisting with events work. He heard about Christian Aid through the London School of Economics where he is studying for a master’s degree in International Development and Humanitarian Emergencies.
Keen to gain an insight into the range of opportunities within a large NGO, Cameron applied for his volunteer role through our website.
Cameron is helping with the creation and implementation of events for major donors, particularly in the Oxford region, and has especially enjoyed helping to support the In Their Lifetime programme.
In the past, he has been closely connected to a range of development programmes, from sustainable development in Kenya and Tanzania to inner-city work with gang members and the homeless in Los Angeles and San Francisco. However, much as he has loved this work, he is enjoying learning how philanthropy plays a vital role in poverty alleviation.
Although he has only been with us a short while, Cameron has already shown his passion for justice and our work.
Roslyn Kirkbride is giving her time and skills in our Newcastle office
Roslyn Kirkbride volunteers in our Newcastle office. She got involved after her sister, a former member of staff, suggested that she might use her IT skills in a voluntary capacity.
The idea of being able to use her knowledge in an organisation she supports was something that really appealed to her.
Roslyn mainly concentrates on helping to keep our database up to date and enjoys having a specific task to focus on, but is always happy to lend a hand with other tasks when required. She sees it all as good fun!
She enjoys learning more about the wider work of our staff, supporters and partners and feels well supported by the North East team.
For Roslyn, volunteering has been a way both to put her IT skills into practice and to give something back which she feels is very fulfilling.
Her advice to others thinking about volunteering with Christian Aid would be to do it if you have the time, as it is a very worthwhile experience - the feeling of helping the organisation is very rewarding.
