The landlocked West African country of Burkina Faso has been facing severe and recurrent flooding for several years.
In 2010, heavy rains resulted in casualties and significant damage. From early July, torrential downpours hit northern and central regions, displacing over 100,000 people.
Residents in flooded areas lost their homes, livestock, and belongings. Buildings and roads suffered significant damage and some villages became inaccessible by land.
According to UNICEF, ‘The flooding dramatically increased the risk of disease and under nutrition.’ The victims were temporarily relocated to schools, government buildings, and other facilities.
The project
In response to these devastating events, Christian Aid has started a new project to assist families affected by the flooding in the North Central and Eastern Regions.
The project is being carried out by two experienced local partners, ODE, the development arm of the Evangelical Churches in Burkina Faso and ATAD, a local agency that specialises in development and advocacy work.
Over the next two years the people living in 25 villages in these two regions will directly or indirectly benefit from the work of these partners. This project is being jointly funded with the European Commission.
