Juliet’s 110km running challenge

A woman running in a fundraising challenge in the Lake DistrictFollowing her successful completion last week of the Ultimate Trails Lakes 110k Challenge to raise money for Christian Aid, we caught up with Juliet Percival from Durham about the challenge and why she did it.

'The course started and finished in Ambleside and took in a complete circuit around some of the most dramatic mountain scenery of the central Lake District. It included six mountain passes, five lakes, and with climbs totalling 14,000 ft, it was the most ascent/descent combined with long distance that I had ever attempted in one go (last year I tackled 100k St Oswald’s Way… beautiful and relatively flat!).

'We set off in the pitch darkness at midnight and for the first few hours I followed the lines of twinkling head torches as we wound our way up and down the hills. As dawn broke at 3am I was up high on a top, and had a beautiful view of the Lakes below, reflecting the early morning light: it was breath-taking!

'I kept that special moment with me as the weather gradually deteriorated to heavy rain and hail later in the day. It didn’t dampen our spirits, and my running buddy and I completed the challenge in 21 hours, feeling tired but extremely happy at the end.

'I love fell running and being in the hills, but this challenge was made even more poignant due to the support I received both from family and friends on the day, and via the online donations to my sponsorship page.

'Recently I’ve been reminded of the importance of Christian Aid’s work in helping the millions of refugees and migrants who have lost their homes due to wars and persecution. I was incredibly touched by everyone’s generosity - it's really restored some of my faith in humanity.”
