Campaigners turn 'Passion into action'

22 March 2012

Campaigners from across the London and the South East came together in March 2012 to learn more about Christian Aid's current campaigns and share ideas for taking action.

We have an incredible wealth of campaigning experience among our supporters, many of whom still have Jubilee scarves hanging around their necks, Make Poverty History bands around their wrists and few traces of blue face paint still left from The Wave.

For others however it can be a challenge to get beyond signing a postcard, important though this is! Aside from finding time in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives it takes courage to lobby your MP, take part in a march or write a strongly worded letter.

The Christian Aid London team recognise this and wanted to bring our supporters together to share their experience, learn from each other and grow in confidence.

Campaigning training event

Eighteen supporters came to our training event, 'Passion into action', and we enjoyed a detailed update on the tax and climate justice campaigns. Speakers included Alasdair Roxburgh, Christian Aid campaigns officer, and Kate Parr, regional coordinator for Sussex.

Kate said: 'The presentations inspired some great questions from the group and we had some excellent discussion around the issues.'

We then broke out into workshops that explored the links between our faith and campaigning, ideas for getting churches campaigning and how to lobby your local MP.

Regional coordinator for London Stephanie Hubbard led a workshop exploring creative ideas for campaigns stunts and how to use the local media. She said: 'It's wonderful to see the enthusiasm of our supporters and hear their ideas. I hope they feel inspired and reassured that we are here to offer advice and moral support.'
