Buxton Good Will Supper

Buxton Good Will Supper 2016Thursday 25 February

Kate MacLean writes about a Good Will Supper in Buxton, which she organised along with Glynis Leyland.

Just over 40 people shared an excellent supper at Buxton’s Green Man Gallery.  The unusual venue helped to make a real ‘occasion’ of the evening, the wonderful surroundings softly lit by candlelight, and enhanced with subtle background music.

Great entertainment

We started off with ten minutes of amusing but heartfelt and very apt poetry, written and performed by Andy Tooze.

Our guest speakers then took to the stage before our supper was served.

We ended the evening as it had begun, with light entertainment, this time from Susie and the Bad Habits, who sang five close harmony numbers, from an arrangement of the Arrival of the Queen of Sheba to ‘To make you feel my love’ by Bob Dylan.

Guest speakers

Nick Thorley, whose talk to Church Council in October prompted us to plan this event, spoke inspiringly about ‘stewardship’ and our responsibility to use the world’s resources (and our own assets) wisely, for the common good of this and future generations.

He was followed by Lesley Middleton, a Partner at Cooper Sons Hartley and Williams Solicitors, who spoke with humour about the importance of writing a will and what can go wrong when you don’t or when it becomes out of date.

She emphasised the need for regular reviews, as beneficiaries change and the value of gifts can alter over time.

She also introduced Powers of Attorney and the importance of planning well ahead, to help those who care for you and your financial affairs in later life to know that they are doing so as you would wish.
