Reflections on the Big IF events

Big IF London rally event

1 July 2013

In June, you gathered, you prayed and you spoke out at the Big IF rallies in London and Belfast, calling on world leaders to act on global hunger.

Organised by the ENOUGH FOOD FOR EVERYONE IF… campaign, the rallies were part of a series of events that took place in the run up to the G8 summit hosted by David Cameron in Northern Ireland on 17-18 June.

On Saturday 8 June, tens of thousands of you gathered in Hyde Park in the glorious sunshine to call on G8 leaders to take urgent action to end the scandal that sees one in eight people go to bed hungry every night.

It was a truly amazing day with inspiring speakers, a massive crowd and fantastic live music.

Christian Aid supporter, Elisabeth Burleigh, from Leicester said: ‘It was great to be there – to be there making a difference – to be there as part of something very big.

'To worship with thousands of others is always uplifting, but the church service was planned to encourage, challenge and enthuse us.

'[At the rally] we heard from people to whom this campaign really makes a difference, who have had to steal to get enough food to survive.

'Thank you Christian Aid for all you did to make it possible for us to get there. Thank you for telling us how we can make a difference and encouraging us to do so.

'We just need to keep praying that the G8 will listen and act.’

The following Saturday, thousands gathered for the Big IF concert in Belfast’s Botanic Gardens.

The crowds braved the rain to ensure their message was heard less than 48 hours before world leaders descended on Enniskillen for their two-day summit.

The concert featured inspirational speakers, live music and video messages from celebrities. Acts included Flash Harry, Ulster Orchestra, and Jim Broadbent who read a powerful Seamus Heaney poem.

Thank you!

Thank you to all of you who joined us in either London or Belfast. It was fantastic to hear such passionate and noisy crowds bring their message to the G8 leaders.

Thank you also to those of you who have supported the IF campaign at some point during the year.

Whether wearing your wristband, taking part in our Big IF Fast, lobbying your MP or praying for the campaign; every action you have taken, every friend you have told and every way you have engaged has made a huge difference.

Without you, the campaign's success so far would not have been possible.
