Drop the Debt, ten years on

April 28 2008

The Jubilee Debt Campaign will be celebrating the impact of debt cancellation in Birmingham on Sunday, 18 May 2008.

The Journey to Justice event will mark the tenth anniversary of the landmark demonstration by the Jubilee Debt Campaign, of which Christian Aid is a member.

Ten years later some debts have been cancelled - but the crisis is not over.

It will celebrate the impact of its campaign - as well as outlining the work that still needs to be done.

In 1998, 70,000 campaigners, including many Christian Aid supporters, formed a human chain around the G8 summit in Birmingham to call on the the world's richest nations to take action.

Ten years later some debts have been cancelled, and many lives have been transformed. But the debt crisis is not over.

As well as celebrating the successes so far, Journey to Justice is about building a lasting solution.

Highlights of the event will include a new film showing the impact of debt relief in Tanzania, Zambia and Honduras, as well as video messages from Archbishop Desmond Tutu and President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia.
