Precious Gifts: Hope

Use this film to mark the first week of Advent and discover how you could give the precious gift of hope to Nigerian communities this Christmas.

  1. What do you understand ‘hope’ to mean? As a group, try to come up with a definition that you can all agree on.
  2. Watch the video clip. What message of hope is being brought to the community in Plateau state? Does this change your group definition?
  3. Read Isaiah 9:2. What is being spoken about in this passage? Does this have any impact on your group’s definition of hope?
  4. In the New Testament we see hope in a different light. Use Romans 12:12 to help you reflect on this difference.

Precious gifts: Peace

For the second week of Advent we consider peace. This short video reflects on the peace that can be provided through the provision of a mosquito net.

Bible study

  1. In the video, Amina speaks about being able to sleep peacefully at night now that she knows that she and her children are safe under the net. Are there things that keep you awake at night?
  2. Read John 14:27 – how do you respond to this following the conversation you just had about your concerns?
  3. In Hebrew, ‘peace’ is less about an absence of strife and more about wholeness – how does this change your perception of peace? How might the things that are troubling you prevent you from living the abundant life Jesus promises?
  4. Jesus was heralded as the Prince of Peace for the whole world. As we celebrate Jesus’ birth, how are you bringing peace this Christmas?

Precious Gifts: Joy

In Nigeria, thousands of children’s dreams for the future are cut short by malaria. Our video explains how you can help to stop this.

Bible study

  1. Listen to, sing, or read aloud the words of the carol 'Joy to the world'. How does it make you feel?
  2. In what ways might joy and happiness be seen in the video clip? Where do you find joy in your life?
  3. In Luke 1:46-55, Mary rejoices. What specific things does she name as sources of joy? Are there any that surprise you?
  4. Take some time to write your own song of praise and joy.

Precious Gifts: Love

In this video, we meet a couple whose baby died of malaria and discover what Christian Aid is doing to prevent more people dying from this disease.

Bible study

  1. Love can bring us both joy and pain. Martha’s grief springs from her love of her child. Are there times when love has caused you pain? When has love brought you joy? Has love ever caused you both at the same time?
  2. Read Galatians 5:14. When has love caused you to venture outside your comfort zone? Are you glad it did?
  3. At Christmas we choose to show our love for others by giving presents, or sending cards. Is giving gifts a good way to demonstrate Christian love?
  4. Pray for Christian Aid’s work in Nigeria, and for each other, as Christmas Day draws closer.
