Thanks to weather information Faith Njiru (62) receives through SMS (text) messages, she is able to plan her planting and harvesting more accurately.
You’ll remember that, in Kenya, Christian Aid and our partner Christian Community Services Mount Kenya East have been working with farmers in Mbeere, an area of Kenya particularly prone to drought.
The aim of the project has been to equip farmers with weather forecast information, via text message, helping them to better understand and plan when to plant and when to harvest.
Since the launch of the project, this information has made an enormous difference in the lives of farmers.
Crop yields have increased by 10-20% in most cases, which means bigger profits for farmers.
These profits help pay for basic things like school books and medicines, so farmers don’t have to resort to selling goats and other livestock in times of drought.
We’re also linking the Mbeere farmers up with another project that we’re supporting in Kenya, which is providing them with affordable solar lighting.
This means that they’re not using kerosene lamps which cause respiratory illnesses.
