Malawi drought

In September 2005, Christian Aid launched an appeal to help 4.6 million people facing starvation in southern Malawi, where severe drought was exacerbating already chronic food shortages.

Due to your generosity we raised 1.15 million for partner projects, of which approximately 630,000 has been spent to date.

When harvests failed in southern Malawi, seeds and water, provided by Christian Aid partner Churches Action in Relief and Development, enabled many families to plant a second crop.

We also provided food aid for the most disadvantaged people living with HIV.

Reducing risk in the future

In addition, we have been working with partners to ensure that in future local communities are not living on the edge of starvation, thus reducing the risk of disaster following another bad harvest.

This work includes:

  • sustainable, community-managed irrigation enabling partners to develop expertise that is crucial if they are to banish the spectre of famine

  • helping partners to respond more quickly and coordinate their assessment, analysis and response to emergencies.
