Every day thousands of people around the world die because of poverty, conflict and disaster. Christian Aid’s Emergencies fund makes our vital emergency work possible – whenever and wherever it’s needed.
The fund is also used to help countries prepare for emergencies before they happen – poor countries are particularly vulnerable to natural or manmade disasters.
Right now, Christian Aid partners are responding to the massive earthquake that recently hit Peru, and the powerful hurricane which swept through the Caribbean using money from our Emergencies fund.
Hurricane Felix
Christian staff and partners are waiting to see the impact of Hurricane Felix, a category five hurricane, on Honduras and Nicaragua.
Earthquake in Peru
On 15 August, Peru suffered its worst earthquake for 30 years. The damage and loss of life in the south of the country was considerable with 450,000 people affected; 800 people died and a further 1000 were injured. Our partner organisations in Peru, Health Houses and Fepromu, were able to respond immediately. They will help 5000 families over the next month with the basics they need to survive the daytime heat and the plunging night time temperatures.
Hurricane Dean
Hurricane Dean was the first hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season and more storms are expected. In Jamaica, there have been floods and mudslides and thousands of homes were damaged. Many homes have been damaged or destroyed. Christian Aid partners will be helping people clear up, repair, rebuild and replant.
Have you launched an emergency appeal?
As of yet, we have not launched a separate emergency appeal for either the Peru earthquake or Hurricane Dean. Instead we are relying on our Emergencies fund to cover the immediate emergency response.
The flexibility this fund offers has made it possible to support vulnerable communities in Peru and the Caribbean and helped us respond to these emergencies even when the media spotlight has moved on.
How you can help
Thousands of people in Peru and Jamaica are already benefiting from Christian Aid’s support. But when the next hurricane or earthquake strikes, we need to be ready to respond again.
You can make our emergency response possible by donating to our Emergencies fund. It’s easy to make a one-off cash donation online.
